"The drum is a pharmacy" -- Maestro Manuel Rufino, Taino Elder
The shamanic drum is perhaps the world's oldest instrument after the human voice and it remains incredibly relevant and important. The drum has been used by thousands of ancient indigenous cultures worldwide to heal sickness, connect with the spirit world, prayer, bring community together, tell stories, and more. It is incredibly simple yet amazingly diverse in its many expressions. We will be covering traditional uses of the drum and how to work with it in a ceremonial healing context. We also will embark on creating our own animal hide drums by hand in a drum making ceremony.
The drum is a sacred instrument that speaks a universal language. Its rhythmic heartbeat is at the center of ceremonies held by people all over the world. The shamanic drum is used to communicate with the Spirit and to connect our hearts with the heartbeat of the Earth. It is a powerful medicine that heals the body, heart, mind, and spirit. In this workshop, we will come together in a sacred space to create our own ceremonial hand drum and learn a hand drum-tying technique.
The creation of the drum is a prayer and a ceremony in itself. We will work with our drums as a visioning meditation for our lives and our paths, so that our thoughts and intentions remain in a high vibration as we create the drums and through that process they become part of the drums. Making your own personal drum is a sacred journey and the power of making something like this with your own hands is incredible, it becomes an extension of your own heart & mind.
In this workshop participants will make a 16” Elk hide drum
