"Quiet the mind, and the soul will speak." - Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati
Sunset Meditation is a daily 45-minute community meditation where we sit in silence to focus on the breath and sensations in the body; this is the root of mindfulness. Sunrise and sunset are recommended for practice by many traditions because the planetary energies are supportive for focus and connection during these shifts.
We are taking advantage of the evening time when the sun is closest to the horizon and can nurture us with its energy, wisdom, and light. We will maintain a simple, traditional meditation setup with a small elemental altar, sitting cushions, and a mat.
We do not impose any specific tradition, although the space holders may sometimes open with a brief instruction, sound, guided invocation, or story, drawing on meditative teachings from around the world. The majority of the practice will be spent in silence with your own personal use of the space with support available if needed.
This practice brings attention to the continuous space within and around the body, and the aliveness of sound, sensation, and feeling that lives through us. While it’s natural for attention to get distracted, the pathway home is a relaxing back into the awake space that is aware of this changing life, and cultivating equanimity and peace inside and out.
