Join us for a six week dance series where you will learn ancient healing dances to balance your mind and spirit. Participants are encouraged to attend all classes. The final class will be a performance.
Funmilayo has been teaching Congolese Dance for close to 20 years in New York City and is the director of F.U.S.H.A. Dance Company founded in 1995.
FDC is an urban dance company dedicated to celebrating the abundant richness of dance and culture from Africa and the Diaspora (Congo, West Africa, South America, the Caribbean).
Under the artistic direction of Funmilayo Chesney the goal of FDC is to enrich lives, embolden confidence, and empower people through dance, drama, music, and visual arts. FDC promises to educate on the healing powers of dance and diet while encouraging cross-cultural appreciation and expanding options by building strong leaders in classrooms and communities.
Funmilayo was born in Brazil and grew up in Guyana. Funmilayo traveled extensively to Nigeria and Ghana, where she lived and studied dance for three years. She also visited the Congo - the motherland of her ancestors.
In 1987 to 1992 she was a member of the only traditional Congolese dance company in New York City , Malaki MA Congo and won the Ethnic Dance Award for best Africa dance Instructor in 1996.
Funmilayo has also studied Ballet,Modern, Tap, Sabar , Guinean, Haitian, Afro-Cuban , Afro-Brazilian, Dahome , and Dunham . She words for the DOE where she teaches pre k to 12th grade
The ancient dance of the Congolese, combined with the genius creations of their descendants have shaped musical culture of many music and dance styles in the diaspora: Samba, Salsa, Hip Hop, Regge, Calypso, Cassav, Jazz, Hawaiian, Belly Dance, the Electric Slide, and even Michael Jackson's "Moonwalk", just to name a few.
This is our medicine dance for the womb and prostate, healing vibrations and pelvic rotation.
